4-H Shooting Sports Workshop
Rifle Discipline
Merced County
Saturday, January 11, 2025 – 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Sunday, January 12, 2025 – 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

A 4-H shooting sports workshop for the rifle discipline will be held at the River Oaks Firearms Training Center in Winton, California. Participants must attend both days of training to receive certification. Upon successful completion of the course, the participant will be certified as a rifle trainer and can lead a rifle project at the club level or serve as county trainer to certify other leaders. Teen leaders are permitted to attend the course but must fully participate along with the adults. There is a $35 fee for the course. Stop in the Volunteer Cafe on December 19
As we celebrate our own ethnic and family traditions this season, we are reminded that some youth are not supported in appreciating their ethnic background. Take a break from the busy holiday season and stop in the Volunteer Cafe on Thursday, December 19 to get inspired by how San Bernardino County 4-H started a day camp that helped kids feel good about their ethnic backgrounds. Learn how it got started and how it's going now.

Thank you for your support on Giving Tuesday! California 4-H received support from 113 donors, totaling $28,249! The $5,000 in incentives from the California 4-H Foundation are being distributed and will also add to this total. Giving Tuesday is not just about fundraising - it is also about recognizing how our volunteers give back. Thank you for your support!
 
 
 
State Ambassador Applications Open!

The California 4-H State Ambassador program includes youth who are exceptional in their leadership and service to their communities. They represent the University of California 4-H Youth Development Program at state and national events. Our State Ambassadors develop strong team leadership skills through their year of service.

Freshwater 4-H Community Club Update - November
"Cambria Jones did an amazing job making a scarecrow for the huddies harvest scarecrow contest! Also, Freshwater 4h participated in Baby Week, chaired by the Frietas family. They sent out baskets to St. Joseph Hospital and Mad River Hospital. Food was collected for Thanksgiving baskets at the November meeting, which were given out to families in need."

Ferndale 4-H Community Club Update - November
"Our club is excited to offer two new projects - Record Book/Presentations & Art/Lettering. Both groups met this month. Our Community Pride Group has been busy preparing for the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting, which will be held on December 1st. The group also made ornaments, which will be hung on trees in front of local merchants. At our monthly club meeting, local veteran Dylan Cook spoke to our members and we all enjoyed a Thanksgiving potluck. New members were initiated."

Miranda 4-H Community Club Update - November
"Miranda 4h held our monthly meeting on the 12th of November. We had a lot to cover. first was our annual canned food drive to support the local food pantry. Members made thanksgiving cards for the Healy senior center and our local skilled nursing facility. Members brought in things they had made in their wood shop project to share and report. We had Tom Pie from the local Veterans association as our guest speaker. He asked if we would decorate for the veterans annual Thanksgiving dinner as well as make 100 Christmas Cards for Veterans in Nursing homes. We also discussed making ornaments for the chamber of commerce to go on a tree in Garberville. On the 26th Miranda 4h members came to gather and Decorated for the Veterans community thanksgiving dinner. We also delivered the Veterans Christmas Cards to be sent out."

Applications are now open for the National 4-H Conference being held April 11-16, 2025. National 4-H Conference is the pinnacle experience in 4-H Civic Engagement and Leadership. It provides the opportunity for young people to connect, learn, engage, lead and impact their communities and nation.
 
This conference is hosted by the USDA and is known as "the Secretary's Conference." If you are accepted to represent California at this conference, all travel and conference expenses will be covered by a generous grant from the Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Foundation.
 
Complete application materials and references must be submitted by 5:00pm November 30, 2024. Applicants must be at least 16 years of age by December 31, 2023 and a currently enrolled 4-H Member. Additional application requirements and more information about this event are on the National 4-H Conference event page.

For: New 4-H volunteer educators serving as project leaders.
Learn how to plan and facilitate 4-H learning experiences (projects) with young people in community 4-H club projects, after-school club programs, day camps, special interest (SPIN) clubs, teenagers-as-teachers (teens-as-teachers) programs, and other educational experiences.
 
In the four-part series, 4-H volunteer educators learn about their roles, responsibilities, lesson planning, making learning engaging, working with youth, and effective hands-on learning. Virtual sessions cover content from The UC 4-H Volunteer Educators' Guide: For Volunteers Facilitating 4-H Educational Experiences (published in 2023).
 
The full series is 8-hours
(4 sessions, each 2 hours)
Attend all sessions to earn a 4-H volunteer name badge.

Arcata Bottom 4-H Monthly Club Update - September
"Arcata Bottom had a great October. At our Oct club meeting we had our annual halloween costume contest and gave away an amazing incentive prize. We discussed our upcoming annual dessert auction in November that will be held online and benefits North Coast Children Services and buy socks and shoes for children. Several members attended our petting zoo at Hensels' Ace Hardware's Haunted House Festival in Arcata. Members brought a calf, sheep, goats, ducks, chickens, and rabbits and had a lot of fun sharing our animals with the public. -Kayleigh Miner, Reporter"
 
 
 
Countywide Baby Week
Last month, Ricardo F. from Freshwater 4-H chaired the countywide Baby Week Project. Clubs across the county donate baby products, then the supplies are gathered together, and donated to local hospitals to celebrate the first babies born on National 4-H Week! Thanks to all of our clubs for their donations and Ricardo for putting these beautiful baskets together!

Through our day camp, we helped kids feel good about their ethnic backgrounds. Learn why a positive ethnic identity is important for our youth. Emily will share how their day camp in San Bernardino County started and how it’s going now. The fun and hands-on activities support kids from all backgrounds and can also be used to expand your programming in afterschool clubs.

Miranda 4-H Community Club Update - September
This year's Fair was amazing as always. Miranda 4H members competed in the youth horticulture decision of the fair. Securing them a spot in the Jim Guptons veggie Auction. Members also participated in the youth livestock Auction. Members attended the Deep Pit BBQ. It was delicious as always! We are excited to hold our annual enrollment night on October 8th. A big thank you to the Hurlbut Ranch for donating meat for our meeting.

Hydesville 4-H Community Club Update - September
"We had 9 Hydesville 4-H members participate in the Mendocino County Fair in September. We also helped bake the potato’s for the BBQ! We all had a great month!"

Weekly Updates 9/30/24 - 10/6/24
Last weekend was the Annual Humboldt County 4-H Deep Pit BBQ and it was a success!
A special thanks to those who donated their time, donated meat, or sponsored various parts of the event. Thank you for supporting the 4-H youth in our community!
Over 700 lunches were served! All of our clubs worked together headed by this years host club, Ferndale 4-H, to put on a great event. The money raised from this event goes directly back to supporting our 4-H Youth. 4-H is over 100 years old in Humboldt County, and we plan to be around for many more great years!

Lamb BBQ to Annual Deep-Pit BBQ
The Humboldt County 4-H BBQ is back this year and better than ever! Once known as the Lamb BBQ it is now known as The Annual Deep Pit BBQ. There will be Lamb, Beef, and other meat options, along with sides and desert!

The Annual Deep Pit BBQ is being held on Sunday, September 29th at Rohner Park in Fortuna from 11am-2pm. Individual tickets are $13 and Family tickets serve 4 and are $45. Come down this Sunday, have a great lunch, and support local 4-H Youth!

Attention Clubs: Happy Tuesday! This a friendly reminder that Baby Week Items are due September 30th. Baby Week is an event started years ago as a way for clubs to celebrate the kickoff of National 4-H Week, by donating baby items to be gifted to the first baby born during National 4-H Week at local hospitals. If you haven’t been contacted by the Baby Week Chair or have any questions, please contact the 4-H Office!

Freshwater 4-H Community Club Update - August
"This year's Fair for Freshwater 4H went really well! Maddie VanVleck got second in showmanship, and Kyla Benzinger got third right behind her with their lambs, Maddie also got reserve champion with her goat. Catarina Freitas got first in the 4H Round Robin. Charlie Rose Robberts got 4H champion and supreme grand champion with her pig. Charlie also won senior showmanship with her pig. Overall, these are just some of the major highlights of what Freswater 4H accomplished!"

4-H Whites Closet Open
Happy Fair Week! The 4-H Whites Closet is open today from 10-5 and then the rest of fair week by email appointment to the 4-H Office. Whites are available to any 4-H member in need of whites for fair. All whites have been donated, so there is a wide variety of sizes of shirts and pants. Or if you have any extra whites or other 4-H uniform pieces, our office is happy to take the donation to continue to offer the whites closet for 4-H members.

4-H projects have been dropped off, fair week has officially begun! Make sure to check the livestock barns, the arts and crafts buildings, baked good entries, and the horticulture building to see all the exciting projects 4-H members have been working on this year!

"Summertime has been a busy time for our club! After many of us had a successful time at Redwood Acres fair we jump right in on our preparations for Humboldt County fair! We have had goat, swine, beef and farm machinery meetings! Our club participated in the Fortuna Rodeo Parade and won 1st place! We had lots of families and their animals marching the streets and handing out candy!"

Congratulations to California 4-H alumna Sagen Maddalena on winning the silver in Womens 50 m Smallbore Rifle! It came down to an exciting shoot-off at the end - such a great match to watch! She credits California 4-H Shooting Sports with giving her discipline. We’re so proud and happy for Sagen!

Last weekend Vida W. and Leia C. from the Miranda 4-H Club represented Humboldt County 4-H at California 4-H State Leadership Conference in Davis. California 4-H Youth from across the state gathered together to attend workshops, tours, and other activities to further develop their leadership skills!

Make It With Wool
Be a winner with wool! Enter the California 2024 Make It With Wool Contest.
The California Make it With Wool Contest will be held on Saturday October 5, in Dixon at the Lambtown Festival. Judging will be in the morning followed by the afternoon awards and fashion show. Lambtown Festival website

The Wild West North Coast 4-H Camp was one for the books! 
Campers spent the days making new friends, participating in different centers, cooling off at the river or doing Water Olympics, and much more!
The evenings were spent performing skits each cabin had practiced that day, singing songs, playing games, and enjoying smores by the campfire!
A special thanks to our Adult Volunteers and Teen Staff whom without Camp would not be possible! Wishing we were back at camp already.

Join the Humboldt County Fair Jr Livestock Board for our annual pre-fair set up and clean up event! We will be tackling pen set up and beautification of the livestock area and helping with other pre-fair tasks.

All youth participants will be eligible to enter a raffle to win a prize for their club!
 
 
 
Extension Foundation Campus
eXtension now called Campus
We use the Extension Foundation system to deliver interactive courses, on-demand. This system is now called Extension Foundation Campus (Campus). You can take the courses on a computer or using a mobile app. The mobile app allows you to take the courses offline!
 
In addition to our Core (required) courses for volunteers, we offer eLearning courses at no cost for California 4-H members, volunteers, and staff. Visit the CA 4-H Learning Center to explore our course library and download the app.
 
 
 
If you're starting your first year as a volunteer or coming back after a break of a year or more, this course is for you. You'll learn important parts of 4-H service, including orientation, CANRA guidelines, and the 4-H Thriving Model for Positive Youth Development. You'll also learn about 2-Deep Supervision and how to help create a safe and welcoming environment for all youth. The course takes about 1 hour and 35 minutes to complete and can be done in multiple sessions.
 
 
 
If you're beginning your second year or more without a break of a year or more, this course is for you. It provides important updates on policies and best practices to keep you informed. It covers CANRA guidelines and the 4-H Thriving Model for Positive Youth Development. You'll also learn how to help create a safe and welcoming environment for all youth. The course takes about 55 minutes to complete and can be done in multiple sessions.

Ignite by 4-H
Ignite by 4-H, our annual summit, returns for its third year in Washington D.C. from March 12-16, 2025, to inspire teens nationwide to find their spark in many topics across STEM, Ag, Healthy Living, and Belonging. High-school-aged teens can continue to fuel their career paths and build career readiness skills to lead for a lifetime.
We have vacant positions on our Extension design and planning team in a few of our programming areas. If you are an interested 4-H educator, please apply using the 2025 Ignite by 4-H Design Team Application.
More information on registration fees, sale dates, scholarships, and other details will be forthcoming. For now, we’re excited to see you all again next March!

Now Accepting 2025 Scholarship Applications
Applications are due September 9, 2024.
 
Applications are now open for the 2025 California 4-H Higher Education Scholarships. If you are–or were– a California 4-H member when you received your high school diploma, you may qualify to apply for 4-H Higher Education scholarships to continue your education at accredited vocational schools, colleges, or universities.

Please pay close attention to as things have changed from last year.

Where: Enter the fair grounds through the MAIN gate, across the street from Humboldt Bay Fire station.
Proceed through the horse boarding to the back side of the covered arena.
Please remember that there are horse boarders and other ag kids in this area, drive slow.

When: Tuesday, June 18th.2024
You may enter grounds to line up 10am.

Vet check will begin at 10:00am, weigh ins will be as listed below.

Weigh in schedule will be followed (as below) exclusively as printed below and in the premium book, no exceptions will be made.

All blankets must be removed prior to being vet checked. If you are blanketing, please safely pull over when you enter the grounds to remove blankets. This includes spandex tubing. This was a huge hang up last year. Please make sure you have your blankets off. After you weigh you can put them back on.

PLEASE PACK YOUR TRAILERS ACCORDINGLY. Absolutely no animal can be stalled/caged with out going through and passing vet check. If you put a non-vetted animal in a cage/stall , that animal will be sent home, you will be responsible for disinfection of the area & that entry will become a scratch.

*NEW* Small animal(cavy&rabbits) vet check will be in the with the large animal vetting. Rabbits will be weighed the day of show for meat pen purposes.

*NEW* All poultry will be vet checked in parking lot across from the fair grounds next to the baseball field. Once your poultry is vetted /inspected you may enter on grounds through the main entrance across from the fire station.

*NEW* All large animals will have a different entry point, you will turn left into the pits (before entering the horse barn area.

*NEW* Hog exhibitors- You MUST HAVE your original Prop 12 certification with you in hand. Yes, we know you uploaded it, but you have to have it with you. If you do not, we will turn you around to go get it, there are NO MARKET hogs to be on grounds without it.

*NEW* Your market animals will be tagged prior to the scale.

After you reach the scale, please check in with the intake table to make sure your medical release, terminal sale papers, auction luncheon tickets, extra passes etc are taken care of. We will have parking passes & extra bands for sale.

Registered breeding animals must check their paper work with the livestock superintendent Tuesday night before 7pm.

Steers /cattle you MUST have your yellow tags .

****It is possible that IF your animal is not healthy or potentially ill/contagious, you will not unload and all fees will be forfeited. ***

Ferndale 4-H Community Club Update - May
"At our monthly meeting, members interested in running for an officer position for the upcoming year gave their speeches. We still have a few open positions & members can still run at our June meeting. We also celebrated Mother's Day, by passing out roses to our moms, grandmas & motherly figures. Club members have been working on completing Record Books with leader, Susan Regli. Our officer team met to plan our upcoming Achievement Night, which will be held on Thursday June 6th. We have a fun dinner & theme planned! Hope to see you all there!"

Regarding the budget:
All 4-H Clubs and Councils must prepare an annual budget, have it approved by their membership, and submitted to the UCCE county office for approval. The retention of excess funds at the end of the program year is strongly discouraged.

Regarding Expenses:
• Decisions concerning the disbursement of funds are to be made by the membership.
• For budgeted items, the treasurer should make payments only with proper documentation such as a purchase order, receipt, invoice or other supporting documentation.
• All checks must bear the signatures of two unrelated persons authorized and designated as signatories. The signer may not be the same person as the payee.
• The check memo must include the purpose of payment.

Regarding the giving of gifts:
o Giving of cash gifts (cash or checks) to individuals, businesses, or organizations is not allowed.
o Giving non-cash gifts is allowed to individuals, businesses or organizations if it can be demonstrated that the gift benefits 4-H or is clearly necessary to 4-H’s fulfillment of its role as a good community citizen.
o Non-cash gifts may only be given for the purposes of appreciation, recognition, incentive or sympathy (in the event of death, major illness or severe accident of an individual associated with 4-H or a member of the individual’s family or household).
o Sympathy gifts such as flowers, candy or a book are limited to $75 per individual per year.
o Allowable non-cash gifts include: Tangible personal property (mugs, t-shirts, etc.), mementos and non-negotiable gift certificates and gift cards (i.e., stored-value bank, department store or other retail cards that are not transferable and cannot be redeemed for cash or used to reduce the balance due on an account with the merchant).
o 4-H clubs/councils may not set up a memorial fund in the name of the deceased. However, they may give a sympathy gift to the family or a memorial fund established by someone else in memory of or in support of an individual or cause in lieu of a gift of tangible personal property (not to exceed $75).

Not Allowed:
• 4-H groups are not to conduct lotteries, raffles, bingo, and other games of chance.

Regarding income:
Fundraising Approval: All proposed fundraising activities must be approved via an adopted budget or by an affirmative vote of the membership. All proposed fundraising activities of 4-H clubs and Councils must be submitted to the UCCE county office for approval using Form 8.7 Fundraising Approval.

Regarding Receiving Non-Cash Items:
• 4-H groups may collect non-cash items.
• EXCEPT: 4-H does not accept animals, guns, or firearms as gifts or donations. Any such gifts should be made directly to individuals. (however, gifts to individuals are not deductible as charitable contributions for federal or state income tax purposes.)
