40th Range Camp
This program is organized by University of California Cooperative Extension Livestock and Natural Resource Advisors and Cal Poly Range professor. Our goal has been to introduce students to the professional world of plant, animal, and landscape management. To do this we invite experts in scientific disciplines related to wildlife, forestry, rangeland, and plants, as well as professionals who are involved in managing resources of these kinds on a daily basis. We aim to make the camp a fun experience for the campers, and interesting as well. One of our goals is to send campers home with a useful understanding of the great diversity of career opportunities that are available, and the different paths through colleges and universities that can take you there.
The camp is run by a group of volunteers who take our personal time to organize each year’s event and serve as primary staff for all or part of the camp week. We do our best to limit costs to the greatest extent we can without undermining the educational and social experience of the program.

The 2024 Beef Ambassador Competition is right around the corner! The beef ambassador program is for all kids 12 – 20 with a passion for the beef industry. This is a great opportunity to educate and advocate for the beef industry, while learning critical public speaking and outreach skills. Youth will have the opportunity to work alongside the Humboldt County Cattlemen and Women at beef promotion events throughout the year. The senior winner will have the opportunity to compete at the state level. Contact your club leader or the county office for an application!
The 2024 State Ambassador Educational Platform is Resilience. With resilience, our youth can thrive in a changing the world. Resilience is key to overcoming adversity, adapting to change, and managing stress. Setbacks are inevitable. Resilience helps them bounce back.
4-H Enrollment System Rollover
Please note the following dates for the close of this 4-H year and the start of the new 2024-25 enrollment year.
Families and volunteers will not be able to self-enroll in ZSuite starting June 21st at 12pm. We anticipate family and volunteers will regain the ability to self-enroll starting July 18th.
We encourage you to delay re-enrollment for the 2024-25 program year until the system is open for self-enrollment after July 18, 2024. Any early enrollments into ZSuite before the official opening will be deleted.
If enrollment or re-enrollment is necessary during the period the systems are offline, your county staff will work with you to complete the enrollment process.
Please note: All dates listed are subject to change based on our vendor and UC ANR 4-H needs. Any changes will be broadly communicated by the State 4-H Office.

Freshwater 4-H Community Club Update - March
"This month, during our general meeting, we talked about Presentation Day, and one of our officers presented a poem called “This is Nebraska” for us. We talked about the upcoming Lamb and Goat sale, the weight changes for certain animals, and an upcoming online desert auction that we will have to raise money for our club. Our Recreation leaders lead us in a game called “What Did You Bring to the 4-H Meeting?” and we had lots of answers! Some people brought pens, paper balls, balloons or empty pockets. It was a lot of fun! We also talked about 4-H camp and the kinds of activities they might have, what age you need to be to become a counselor, and the amount of days you would stay, we talked about the upcoming cupcake meeting and horse meeting, and YQCA training. This month, we had a lot of fun."

Fortuna 4-H Community Club Update - March
"Our club members have been very busy, busy, busy!! We began the month at our community meeting with guest speakers from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department. Sergeant, Eric Losey, Special Services Deputy Raleigh Willoughby, and Search and Rescue volunteer Jan Fredrickson along with her K-9 buddies Gracie and Daisy. They did an overall demonstration of search and rescue and a drone utilization. Thank you guys for taking the time and coming and talking to our club. We then reviewed County Presentation Day, local fair updates and our upcoming community service events. Our beef group met up at Ferndale Meat Co. to learn about the grades of meat processing. The handcraft group sewed away made cute aprons. Garden group enjoyed the sunshine while learning about seeds, and got starts going. Our poultry group reviewed fair supplies, and discussed their upcoming presentation. If you would like to see their presentation, please join them on April 14 at 11:30 at the Fortuna Library. Baby piglets make everything better! Our swine group met at Julie McGill’s farm and reviewed feeding regiments for the fair projects, talked about worming medicines, learned how to give a pig a shot, talked about the Prop 12 , and got to see some cute baby piglets! Our club had a fun contest. We had members dress in as much green as they possibly could. Thanks Dr. French for being such a fun judge. Our club members got to serve our community at the annual Fortuna Kiwanis 4-h spaghetti feed. The members served the spaghetti dinner, cleared tables, set the tables, served ice cream , and put tables and chairs away. Our club also had a a bake sale with lots of yummy homemade goodies. Thank you Fortuna Kiwanis for your continuous support to our local 4-H clubs. Grace Holmgren attended the County Presentation Day and did exceptionally well. Good Job Grace!!

"This month our club was busy! We had a great club meeting filled with tons of information and updates! Everyone is busy taking care of their animals and selling tickets for the spaghetti feed! We are learning and looking forward to upcoming events and fairs! Our baking group had a build your own pizza night with a movie, farm machinery went to the logging conference and many attended the YQCA training and auction. The spaghetti was a success! Thank you community for all your support!"

"For the month of March Arcata Bottom 4-H had many events. The first event of the month was the Swap Farm field trip, We learned a lot of new information and had a lot of fun. After that we had a fundraiser at Round Table in Mckinleyville. A lot of people came out and supported Arcata Bottom 4-H and we made a lot of money. That's all for the month of March!"

4-H Civic Engagement Needs Assessment Survey
The CA 4-H Civic Engagement Advisory Committee wants to learn more about what resources, support, and events 4-H youth and adult volunteers want regarding civic engagement. Civic engagement is about being involved in your community, such as community service, learning about government, voting, service learning, and more. We want to know how 4-H can better support youth in being civically engaged.
Adults and parents are welcome to complete the survey but especially we want to hear from youth ages 11 and up. Your responses to this survey will help improve the 4-H experience for future program years!

We are excited to finally announce details for Mustang Camp! Camp will be from 10am on June 28th to 2pm on June 29th. Drop off and Pick-up is at the Lassen County Fairgrounds. Limited to 25 campers. Youth need to be 4-H age (9-18) and able to spend one night camping with us at the fairgrounds. If you have questions, please email lksnell@ucanr.edu.

Freshwater 4-H Community Club Update - February
"During our February general meeting, we played a game called “Match” lead by our Recreation officers. We talked about the Nilson’s feed seminar and about an upcoming lamb and goat sale. We also talked about when 4H camp would be and the new minimum/maximum weights for livestock at the Humboldt County Fair. At the lamb project group meeting, they talked about docking tails. Earlier in the month, some of us partook in a Virtual Show Pig Seminar. During our cupcake meeting, we made Valentine’s Day Cake Pops and Little dogs made of cake. We had a guest speaker at our meeting, police officer Nick Jones from the Eureka Police Department came in with his police K9, Bolo. Officer Jones showed us Bolo search for drugs and answered any questions anyone had about his police work or his K9."

Hydesville 4-H Community Club Update - February
"This month we talked about keeping up on record books and our animals. Many of our club members went to the feed seminar at Nilsen’s Feed. We learned lots on how to feed our animals the proper feed and may won tee shirts and feed! We are all looking forward to getting our animals and start working with them."

"For the month of February Arcata Bottom 4-H had many events. Arcata Bottom 4-H celebrated Valentines Day by picking two sweethearts which were Rex Bohn and Burt VanDuzer. We also had every member bring about 2 dozen cookies and deliver them to local businesses and supporters of 4-H. That is all for the month of February."

"At our February Club meeting, we discussed our upcoming Petting Zoo & fundraiser we will host in March. More details to come as the event gets closer! Following our meeting, we held a Valentines Party, including a pinata, musical chairs, and baked goods. This year, our club has two new exciting groups for our members - Hunter Safety & Leadership. Our Hunter Safety Group has been busy preparing for our upcoming test. Good luck to all!"

Fortuna 4-H Community Club Update - February
"Our club was lucky to have our state vet Dr. Meghan Mott as our guest speaker at our monthly meeting! Dr. Mott went over the new proposition 12, talked about the bird flu and how birds can get it, went over, how a pig could prolapse. She explained what a minor prolapse was, and a major one was and when to call the vet. Our project groups are in full swing! It was a rainy meeting for our beef group. They learned how to show a beef, went over grooming products for a beef, and then practiced showing them in the rain! Our craft group has been crafting away! Making pillowcases and learning how to do embroidery! Our club will be busy this next month!! We will have our club presentations, we will be discussing the Kiwanis 4-h spaghetti feed and bake sale, our community service project, and much more. We finished our meeting off by showing our love and making seniors some Valentines Day cards and having a Valentine’s Day snack."

"Miranda 4h is going strong. Between our projects and our community service we are staying busy. Below is a segment written by Leia Carrico
On Saturday, February 24th, several families from Miranda 4h gathered in the town of Miranda for a community pride project. We planted snow drop and tulip bulbs at both town signs, we collected litter along both sides of the Avenue of the Giants, We cleared the weeds from the sidewalks, as well as cleaning up the bus stop. we all enjoyed the sunshine while giving back to our community."

Join the Volunteer Development Advisory Committee
We are restarting the Volunteer Development Advisory Committee! Give feedback and suggestions for improving volunteer experiences in 4-H. The Advisory Committee will help guide the development of resources to support volunteers, such as online courses and workshops.
Who can apply:
• 4-H members ages 14 to 19 during their term (March 2024-June 2025, with option to renew for one year);
• 4-H adult volunteers (young 4-H alumni are encouraged to apply!)
• 4-H professionals - Community Education Specialists, Advisors, Staff
• UCCE Academics
Time commitment: Approximately 3-5 hours per month. Quarterly 1.5-hour Zoom meetings, with independent project work between sessions.
SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY
MARCH 1ST DEADLINE
The USDA 1890 National Scholars Program is accepting applications! This program provides educational and career opportunities for students seeking bachelor’s degrees from 1890 land-grant universities. Applications accepted until March 1, 2024.
This scholarship provides full tuition, fees, books, room and board to students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher pursuing degrees in agriculture, food, natural resource sciences, or related academic disciplines. Scholars are also eligible for summer internships that may convert to full-time employment with USDA after graduation.
NEW FOR 2024: Registration for Virtual Regional Event
To ensure an appropriate evaluator-to-presenter ratio, California 4-H is modifying their presenter registration process. Evaluator registrations open in January/February. Presenter registration will be contingent on the number of evaluators already registered. Starting on March 6, 2024, and continuing every Wednesday through April 17, 2024, at 6 PM, we will release presenter slots for youth participants based on the number of evaluators we have registered. Registration for presenting slots will operate on a first-come, first-served basis.
Evaluator Registration is now open - please share with youth (ages 16+ and adults)

Over the 120 years of UC 4-H, the presentation program has expanded to include various public speaking formats and opportunities for members to receive feedback from evaluators. The Tractor Supply Paper Clover Campaign runs twice each year, and is an important part of Tractor Supply Company’s longstanding partnership with National 4-H Council. Today, we’re delighted to share that the fall campaign raised more than $1 million for 4-H youth nationwide! Thanks to Tractor Supply customers, Team Members and communities for their generosity and support for this important organization. JOANN Campaign, March 3 to May 4
We are thrilled to announce that JOANN has renewed our partnership agreement for another three years! Over the past three years, we have seen a dramatic increase in the campaign results and in the funds going to your local programs, from a total of $116,000 raised in 2021 to a record-breaking $1.28 million raised in 2023.

JOANN Point of Sale Campaign
March 3- May 4, 2024
During the two-month promotional time frame, customers can donate or round-up at checkout in JOANN stores to support 4-H.
The JOANN campaign relies on consumer donations, so the more you can help drive people to JOANN stores, the more California 4-H will earn! Funds raised through JOANN supports the State Fashion Revue contest at State Field Day. A social media toolkit will be shared on the Resource Center soon.
All JOANN stores will also receive a Team Member box with information about 4-H and our partnership along with materials to encourage store engagement.
Returning Volunteers Overlap of Service
On December 31, the 6-month period where Adult Volunteers from the 2022-23 year could keep helping in the 2023-24 year ended. To stay involved for the rest of this year, your enrollment in ZSuite must be approved as Active before you start volunteering.
Talk to your local county 4-H office about completing all the Volunteer requirements to get your enrollment approved in ZSuite to become Active.

True Leaders in Equity Institute 2024

The True Leaders in Equity Institute (TLEI) is a training program for passionate youth ages 14-19 to learn about equity and inclusion and how it affects their communities. This training and leadership opportunity challenges participants to ideate and champion equity-related projects that will grow 4-H in their communities.
Youth-adult-led teams explore their unique views on equity and inclusion. As a team, you will develop plans to spark innovative solutions to create more welcoming and inclusive environments in your community.
Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) Advisory Committee
If you are passionate about equity and inclusion and how it affects your communities, we invite you to join the 4-H Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) Advisory Committee.
Committee members have the opportunity to attend the True Leaders in Equity Institute held in July. Through the Advisory Committee, you will work together to prepare for the conference.
The JEDI Advisory Committee will be applying for scholarships to attend the True Leaders in Equity Institute. You must be a member of the JEDI Advisory Committee to attend.

It’s time to sharpen up your shooting skills and start preparing for the Fortieth Annual State 4-H Shooting Sports Match, sponsored by the Siskiyou County 4-H Council. Instead of coming together at one event, the State 4-H Shooting Sports Match is a "postal match": participants have their fired targets recorded by their instructor and the target results are mailed in for ranking.

How to sign up
All currently enrolled 4-H members ages 9-19 may compete in the 2024 State 4-H Shooting Sports Match. All registration forms must be sent to your county UCCE office for your 4-H club, along with payment by the club. Personal checks will not be accepted. Your club must submit this to your county office BEFORE March 15 - the earlier the better!
Give your UCCE office time to process and submit applications!
Your UCCE office must sign to verify that all entrants, adult and youth, are currently enrolled in 4-H. UCCE offices must send the completed forms and payment, postmarked by March 15, 2024, to Siskiyou County Leaders Council, 1655 South Main Street, Yreka, CA 96097.
4-H Youth In Action
The 4-H Youth in Action program amplifies the diverse stories and leadership of 4-H youth who are making a difference in their communities every day.
Each year, program participants receive an exciting year of media training and national opportunities to share their 4-H story and leadership.
Applications open on January 29, 2024 and close April 1, 2024.

Youth in Action Info Session for Applicants
February 21, 4:00-5:00pm PT (7:00-8:00pm ET)
Teens aged 14-19 are encouraged to apply to the 4-H Youth in Action Program for the chance to tell their 4-H impact story and win a $5k educational scholarship.

Beekeeping Mini Grant

We will award four $300 mini grants to project leaders who are currently enrolled in CA 4-H in any county, leading a Beekeeping Project.
The funds must be used to purchase beekeeping equipment, supplies and curriculum. Preference will be given to those wishing to purchase one bee box, one beehive colony and related start-up supplies to manage a hive.

We will award up to four $500 mini grants to CA 4-H Youth Members who are currently enrolled in a CA 4-H Guide Dog Project and who are raising a puppy for guide dog service.
The funds can be used for any expenses related to raising one or more guide dog puppies, including food, equipment, veterinary bills, medications, and/or transportation to CA 4-H and affiliate Guide Dog organization meetings and activities.

The State Incentives and Recognition Advisory Committee will be hosting a repeated webinar to help volunteers, youth, parents, and staff understand the different types of Record Books that can be submitted for evaluation.
Webinars include a 30-minute presentation, followed by time for questions and answers. We will cover historical book options, Sparks Achievement books, Emerald and Impact Star Books, and Record Books that have no achievement records.

Fortuna 4-H Community Club Update - January
"Paper snow ball game, Hot Cocoa bar, collecting fuzzy socks for seniors, an amazing presentation from our poultry group are just a few things that our awesome club had at our January monthly meeting. We discussed the up coming presentation day and we are looking forward to our guest speaker in February!! Our project groups are in full swing! Beef- learned about various beef equipment, kids practiced and learned how to tying a beef properly, they discussed nutrition, and graphed there projects out as well. Garden — they made homemade veggie stone soup and browsed seed catalogs for spring time planting. Handcraft— they embroidered towels and are working on pillow cases Swine—visited the Humboldt County Swap yard and thanks to Officer Dishmon, our members learned the what proper shelter should be for your project, feeding regimens, what to look for when you pick your pig out, new members learned about what supplies they will need for there projects."

QUALIFICATIONS
1. The applicant must be a current 4-H member in Humboldt or Del Norte counties, including active membership while in high school.
2. Applicant must be graduating from high school
OR Applicant must have passed the California High School Proficiency Exam (CHSPE) or received the Graduate Equivalency Diploma (GED) the previous school year and must be currently attending college as a full-time student.
3. All scholarship recipients must use the scholarship within twelve (12) months of the time it was awarded. He/she must be a full-time student for the entire school year to receive the total amount of the scholarship.
4. The applicant must complete and submit the application and information according to the following instructions. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered for a scholarship.

Freshwater 4-H Community Club Update - January
"This month, during our general meeting, we found out that we have a new project group for poultry and small animals, lead by Martie Fleek. Also during our general meeting, we played “This or That” for recreation. Another thing that is new this month is that we have two or three new members that have joined us. We are very excited about the new member and the new project group(s)."

Humboldt County Fair Important Announcements
Youth week fair dates: August 20-25, 2024
SWINE EXHIBITORS
All pigs exhibited in market classes and sold through the Humboldt County Fair Jr Livestock Auction must come from Prop 12 Certified breeders. A copy of your compliance certificate will be required to be uploaded with your fair entries.
New Minimum Weights:
Market Beef: 1100 lbs
Market Lambs: 110 lbs
Market Swine: 210 lbs
Market Goats: 65 lbs (no change was made to goat minimum weight)
Meat Rabbits, Meat Chickens,Meat Turkeys:
All 4-H & FFA champions will sell. The 3rd place 4-H and FFA will be eligible to sell IF the exhibitor does not have another non-champion animal selling in the Jr Livestock Auction. No other entires will be eligible for the Jr Livestock Auction.
The Humboldt County Fair Jr Livestock Auction will now be a TERMINAL SALE. All animals sold thru the Jr Livestock Auction will be processed. Buyers will no longer have the option to take animals home live.
Pre-tagging of all market animals will be required. More information to come on this.
Hydesville 4-H Community Club Update - January
"In the month of January all project groups started to meet. We have been talking about breeders, feed and animals we plan to raise. At our club meeting we talked about all the upcoming meetings and played a fun game. Our club is excited to start another year of fun! These photos are from our baking group! They all baked their favorite items, shared their recipes and enjoyed tasting each other’s food!"

Ferndale 4-H Community Club Update - January
"At our monthly club meeting, we held a Talent Show that club members participated in. Also at the meeting, club member Gianna Regli was presented with gold medals for her outstanding demonstration at both Regional and State Presentation Days - congratulations Gianna! Later in the month, our officer team attended the 4h County Management Meeting. Our team provided the meal for the meeting; officers reported on club activities and spoke about their favorite leaders."
